2009 Award Recipients

Community Mediation Inc. – Community Mediation’s primary goal is to challenge the racial and ethnic stereotypes about foreign-born members of the New Haven community. It received funding in support of a photographic display and documentation of their project. www.community-mediation.org

Easter Seals/Goodwill Industries – Easter Seals is offering a 4 ½ week long summer program entitled “Flying High: The FLC Summer Olympics 2009”. IANH’s funding will allow 40 students to learn about sports, cultures, customs and languages in various countries. www.newhavengoodwill.easterseals.com

Ethnic Heritage Center – IANH is going to support an exhibit by the Ethnic Heritage Center which focuses on collecting, preserving and disseminating ethnic histories. The spot light of the exhibit is going to be on wedding ceremonies in different countries. www.southernct.edu/ethnic_heritage_center/

Fellowship Place, Inc. – Fellowship Place received an award for the continuation of its multi-cultural awareness program. The program is a series of talks followed by ethnic found luncheons and arts activities related to the country that is being presented. www.fellowshipplace.org

James Hilhouse High School – Hillhouse High School’s ESL Department received funding in support of the students’ research projects and a related field trip aimed at fostering tolerance, cooperation and understanding of other cultures. www.nhps.net/hillhouse/

JUNTA for Progressive Action – The JUNTA’s Worker Center received funding to establish a quarterly newsletter, written by immigrants and published in English and Spanish. It will focus on celebrating the wide range of cultures in the New Haven area while providing information about worker’s rights. www.juntainc.org

Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven – IANH will support Literacy Volunteers in its effort to train and retain volunteer tutors for its 600+ ESOL students. www.lvagnh.org

Mitchell Public Library – The Mitchell Public Library, located in Westville, received an award to fund a variety of cultural arts performances to showcase and celebrate the diverse heritages of the Westville community. www.cityofnewhaven.com/library/Mitchell.asp

New Haven/Leon Sister City Project – The NHLSCP offers workshops to local educators entitled “Relearning the World” in order to promote critical literacy skills. www.newhavenleon.org

New Haven Youth Soccer – New Haven Youth Soccer enrolls approximately 800-900 children in its soccer leagues. IANH fund will be used to support New Haven Youth Soccer’s International Day in June. www.nhysoccer.org

Yale Peabody Museum – IANH continues to support Fiesta Latina, an international interactive celebration of New Haven’s international communities. www.peabody.yale.edu

Round the World Women – IANH continues to support the goals of Round the World Women to provide activities and network opportunities for visiting foreign women. www.rww-international.com

Your Place: Youth Center – Your Place, which focuses on recreational, academic, and leadership building activities to prevent violence among youth gangs received funding for its “Different Cultures Initiatives” which will foster a cross-cultural dialog and a cooking group specializing in international cuisine.
