2008 Award Recipients

Christopher Columbus Family Academy – Christopher Columbus is a community school serving the Fair Haven area. It is dedicated to implementing a curriculum that promotes bi-literacy, bilingualism and biculturalism in both English and Spanish. Funds from the IANH will be used to offer Mandarin language classes in order to introduce students to a culture that is less familiar to them but that will strengthen the understanding between the people of Greater New Haven and the world. www.nhps.net/columbus

Easter Seals/Goodwill Industries - Easter Seals Goodwill Industries was born as a result of affiliations, collaborations and subsequent mergers with other community service providers in Greater New Haven. What has emerged is a progressive, community-based organization committed to its mission to enhance employment opportunities and the quality of life for people with disabilities and other special needs. IANH provided financing for a 5 week summer camp entitled “World Series 2008: The Circle of Life” at the Family Learning Center at Martinez School, New Haven. The goal is for students who have minimal contact with individuals not of Hispanic ancestry to deepen the students’ appreciation for other cultures and sharpen awareness of global issues. www.newhavengoodwill.easterseals.com

Eli Whitney Museum - The Eli Whitney Museum received funding from the IANH in order to support the Museum’s One World/Many Voices Project, a programming effort in Spanish. This will help to reach out to the Spanish speaking community of Greater New Haven and to promote intercultural awareness and communication. www.eliwhitney.org

Fellowship Place, Inc. – With funding from the IANH, Fellowship Place is going to enhance its multi-cultural awareness program with monthly presentations, including a community speaker series. www.fellowshipplace.org

Habitat for Humanity – Habitat for Humanity builds affordable Habitat homes for low income families. IANH funds will be used to get younger volunteers involved in a building project for a Hispanic family. It will promote cross-cultural understanding between suburban volunteers and Habitat families. www.habitatgnh.org

Hamden Middle School PTA - The mission of Hamden Public Schools is “to ensure all our students learn to the best of their potential each and every day they are entrusted to our care.” The PTA supports cultural enrichment activities that span the disciplines of music, social studies and language arts in order to raise awareness and sensitivity among students and to prepare them to live in a global society. IANH funds will be used for a series of performances, one by Mikata, with a rhythmic expedition of the U.S., Africa, the Caribbean and South America. www.hamden.org/page.cfm?p=85

JUNTA for Progressive Action – The JUNTA for Progressive Action strives to improve the social, economic and political conditions of the Latino community in Greater New Haven. With support from the IANH, the JUNTA (in partnership with the Fair Haven Public Library) plans to establish a film series that promotes cultural awareness and understanding, community cohesion, and dialogue on international social and political issues. www.juntainc.org

Music Haven - In November 2008 and February 2009, Music Haven plans a series of workshops entitled “Music from Around the World” to celebrate and explore the music and culture of seven different countries. These performances and presentations are relevant to IANH’s mission because it teaches children from the Greater New Haven community the importance of cultural understanding and globalism. www.musichavenct.org

Neighborhood Music School - The Neighborhood Music School is the largest independent not-for-profit community arts school in Connecticut. Its mission is to provide the highest quality instruction in music and dance and to make it accessible to people of all ethnic and economic circumstances. Funding from the IANH will support a project called “Sharing Asian Music and Culture with the Asian and non-Asian Communities”. At the heart of this effort is collection of Asian songs, published in a booklet. Sharing Asian songs between parents and children will promote intergenerational knowledge and increase awareness in the non-Asian community. www.nmsmusicschool.org

Online Journalism Project/New Haven Independent – The Online Journalism Project promotes interactive community journalism on the Internet. The Project will use IANH funding to expand coverage of immigration and international issues in New Haven. It plans to create s series called “New International Haven”. www.newhavenindependent.org

Yale Peabody Museum – The Yale Peabody Museum and the JUNTA for Progressive Action are organizing the 6th annual Fiesta Latina, serving the local Latino community and introducing Latino culture to the visitors of the Peabody Museum. The event is truly bilingual, with numerous educational activities such as music, dance, cooking and storytelling. www.peabody.yale.edu

Round the World Women - The organization helps women from other countries in New Haven in assisting them in their orientation and adjustment to a new community. The program provides a social setting where new friends are made and experiences are shared. IANH support is a major portion of the organization’s budget that goes to guest speakers, holiday celebrations, crafts, and visits to local places of interest are part of their ongoing activities. www.rww-international.com
