2010 Award Recipients

The awards this year have been dedicated in the memory of Marty Miller, a member of the IANH's Board, whose insightful comments and invaluable experience guided us through the 2010 awards process. His expertise and kindness will be greatly missed.

Arte Inc. received funding for the Discovering Latino Artists/Celebrating Cultures project. Arte will mount five art exhibitions throughout the year to showcase emerging Latino artists. In addition to the general Greater New Haven community, the art exhibits will also be visited by New Haven Public Schools students.

The International Association will provide funding for an International Day Celebration at the Augusta Lewis Troup School in New Haven. The celebration is tied in with a social studies program that examines how countries and cultures remain unique in a global world.

Fellowship Place, Inc. received support for its multi-cultural awareness program. The program consists of a series of talks followed by luncheons and arts activities related to the country that is being presented.

The annual International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven will receive our support for a workshop and performance by jazz trumpeter Amir ElSaffar. The group is focused on joining the meodic and rhythmic structures of the maqam tradition of Iraq with contemporary jazz music. Tuesday, June 15 at 8 pm.

Music Haven received funding to commemorate the centennial of the Mexican Revolution with a celebration of its music. The Cuyos Quartet, a pre-professional string quartet from Mexico, will share their musical tradition and cultural with New Haven residents through workshops at schools and free community concerts.

With the help of a grant from the IANH, the New Haven Public Schools will provide additional scholarships for New Haven public high school students to participate in the year-long Yale University High School Cooperative Language Program. Students in this program study Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Irish Gaelic, German, ancient and modern Greek, Italian, Japanese, KiSwahili, Polish, Portuguese, or Russian; all student participants will share their language and cultural learning experience in the school district.

The folkloric dance group Generacion Latina, a program of St. Rose of Lima, will showcase Ecuadorian culture through musical and dance performances. The IANH grant helps this young dance troupe increase their performances and share their culture with residents of Greater New Haven.

Your Place: Youth Center received funding to offer an “Our World,” an after-school program for teens and summer program for children 5-12 . The program will introduce different cultures and, working with Pathways for Mutual Respect Training and the PeaceJam Group, help students to increase their ability to communicate across cultural lines.

Worthington Hooker School PTA received funding to a culture project focusing on India and Pakistan. The project involves classroom activities in the arts and social studies and culminates in cultural evening featuring performances by the students and food from the region.
